Backlash

Recovery is a bumpy road, and it goes with ups and downs. One time you can’t get out of your bed, while the other time you are full of energy. It has to do with the fact that when you have energy again, it feels like everything is over and you can go on with your old life.  Then you fall back into your old behaviour and you get a setback (you feel it immediately).

It feels like you’re back at the very beginning. It feels that way, but it isn’t. You are on the right track, but you went too fast.

Then take a crush day or a shorter period in which you do nothing. Nothing at all except hanging out and sleeping. Wait until you feel like things are getting better again and go on.

Own experience

Countless times I bumped into my limits. That my body intervened after a few days of running too hard. I, but certainly those around me, were really waiting for old Marco to return. Sometimes it seemed that way. Then I woke up in the morning and thought it’s over, yes!! We can get on with the old life!!

But that was usually short-lived and ended with a backlash. It was a disappointment for everyone, especially for me. I allowed myself a few days to recover and after that I just turned out to still have a burnout.

After a while I started to notice when it threatened to become too much. Then I tried to intervene beforehand. It got better and better, so the recoils became less.

What’s positive?

At the first recoil you can be shocked and a little confused. But you must see it as a signal from your body. You’re not quite back to square one. But your body puts on the brakes for a moment.

The good thing is that you will recognize it more and more. This allows you to anticipate and make smarter and therefore better decisions.

Before the burn out you just went on. Now you take more care of yourself. This makes your recovery better.

Tips:

1.   You’re going to have setbacks and you’ll be shocked. This is tuition.

2.   Take rest time (crush day) in the event of a setback.

3.   Discuss with those around you how it came. Where did it go wrong?

4.   If you feel like having some energy again: step on the brake. Save the energy.

Keep it going it will be fine!!
The backlashes can really upset you. You can be quite shocked and confused for a few days. I know you can feel bad, panicky and sad. It is good to just let those feelings come and to notice that when you have a little energy again, this feeling subsides.

You really are on your way to recovery. It’s not like you failed weeks ago. No, your body intervenes, that’s it.

Try to think of what went wrong, where you drained too much energy and learn from that for next time.

Over time, you will notice that these backlashes diminish. You are really learning how to organize your life differently and that is 100% profit. That’s growing!!ery comes in fits and starts. Before the burn out you just kept walking. Now you take more care of yourself. This makes your recovery faster and faster.
